Gretchen is a survivor, plain and simple. No matter what challenges life hurls her way, she finds a way to claw her way back and beats you with it own broken bones. The most important thing to Gretchen is Loyalty. And then her car, she really likes her car.
It was a forgone conclusion that she end up in the gang life. And she thinks, truly, it was meant to be. It went from taking care of her family to taking care of her neighborhood, her gang. She became known as the 'big sister' of the hood and to anyone. And it was known that you don't fuck with her or anyone under her protection. Because she'd really fuck your whole life up.
Gretchen considers this part of her life to be 'good'. She had a family, she had people to take care of. It was brutal, hard, and there was death everywhere. But it worked out and they lived comfortably.
But then her brother died. Shot and killed in the streets by cops. Then her mother followed soon after, unable to cope with the loss of her son. Gretchen found her mother dead in the kitchen. Corporate ran through her neighborhood, privatized military forces cleaning the streets out. Neither she or her gang stood a chance.
Those who didn't die, dropped their colors and left. Gretchen resisted until she was the last one left. It wasn't until Smoke, a former member of her gang, came back to pull her out. He's trying to help her, get her set on a different path and adjust to the changing world.
